From the Earth to the Moon, Angelos Spartalis (GREECE, 2013), 87'

from-the-earth-to-the-moon1-webCut-out animation, Collage

The creation of the first Greek long animated film made for the cinema, began in the summer of 2008 and was completed in March 2013. Its duration is 96 minutes. Based on the homonymous book by Jules Verne ("De la Terre à la Lune", 1865), this film focuses mostly on the author's humorous yet scathing criticism of the bellicose worldwide, not failing to stress out their unparalleled bravery. It is a "handmade" film that winks to high aesthetics and vulgar laugh.

When the Royal Jelly is stolen, the hornets are suspected and Maya is thought to be their accomplice. No one believes that she's the innocent victim and no one will stand by her except for her good natured and best friend Willy.

The Stressful Adventures of Boxhead & Roundhead is his first feature and he did almost all of it himself in between teaching, freelance animation gigs and his family.

Tito On Ice, Max Andersson & Helena Ahonen (SWEDEN/ GERMANY, 2013), 73' 30''

tito-on-ice1-webLive action, Puppet

To promote their book Bosnian Flat Dog, comics creators Max Andersson and Lars Sjunnesson decide to tour the former Yugoslavia with a mummified Marshal Tito in a fridge.

They encounter a number of artists, musicians, publishers and other characters populating the post-Yugoslav indie cultural scene. As the journey continues through increasingly improbable surroundings, the protagonists begin to question themselves and the reality they find themselves in.

Watching as border control checks turn into improvised snapshot sessions, admiring mutant iron-curtain Disney toys, buying souvenir grenade shell handicrafts and discovering sniper art in blown-out apartments, they find that truth may indeed be stranger than fiction.

A combination of stop-motion animation and documentary scenes, the film turns into a roller coaster ride through a parallel universe where all borders are crazily disintegrating, simultaneously tragic, poetic and bleakly funny.

until-sbornia-do-us-part-web2D computer animation, 3D computer animation

What happens when the wall dividing a small country from the rest of the world falls accidentally? Quiet and stuck in time, the people of Sbornia is now hit by winds of modernity coming from the big city. Conflicts caused by a violent cultural clash mess the protagonists Pletskaya and Kraunu's lives - two well known Sbornians musicians. As result of a continental interference in the habits of Sbornia, some natives wake dormant old beliefs and start rescuing their own identity. The film is based on the musical play spectacle Tangos & Tragedies, created by Nico Gomez and Hique Nicolaiewsky which was presented on stages worldwide very successfully for the past 25 years.

maya-the-bee1-web2D computer animation

until-sbornia-do-us-part-web2D computer animation, 3D computer animation

2D computer animation, 3D computer animation, Cut-out animation, Drawing on paper, Pixilation

This short film is an adaptation of Voltaire's 18th century satire in a nutshell. We follow our naive and hopelessly optimist hero, Candide, on his journey. Throughout the story, the main heroes change and evolve while learning the workings of the world surrounding them. The three main characters meet under different circumstances. Our heroes appear in contemporary clothes, each wearing one piece of 18th century clothing or wig, thus referring to the fact that we interpret the original work in the present world. Candide is introduced as a careless optimist and a kind idealist; however, during his journey his character embarks on inner explorations. Candide's main partner during his journey is Master Pangloss, a philosopher who advocates optimism, but is generally a sceptic. Cunégonde, with whom both Candide and Pangloss are in love, is in the beginning of the story a naive, spoiled young woman from a wealthy family.

Dinner For Few, Nassos Vakalis, (USA, 2014) 10' 07''

dinner-for-few-web
3D computer animation

"Dinner For Few" is a ten minute CG-animated film depicting a sociopolitical allegory of our society. During dinner, "the system" works like a well-oiled machine. It solely feeds the select few who eventually, foolishly consume all the resources while the rest survive on scraps from the table. Inevitably, when the supply is depleted, the struggle for what remains leads to catastrophic change. Sadly, the offspring of this profound transition turn out not to be a sign of hope, but the spitting image of the parents.

Ex Animo, Wojciech Wojtkowski, (POLAND, 2013), 6' 52''

alt2D computer animation, Drawing on paper

An animated impression. Images conjured up by the animator form a two-dimensional
reality of their own. Absurd and unrelated scenes describe the rules governing the
world confined to a sheet of paper and animation technique. The relationships
between the characters seem strangely familiar.
