Greek premiere: Chico & Rita

  • PDF
chicoandrita One week before its official Greek release, the most beautiful (and sensual) romance of Chico & Rita comes to Be there! A sensual and sensational triumph, coming from the Oscar-awarded Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque). It narrates with style and jazz the doomed love affair of two musicians in Cuba before and during the Castro revolution.

Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unite them, but their fates are shaped by political and musical turmoil.

Fernando Trueba enlists the Valencian artist and designer Javier Mariscal to create the unique feel of Havana during that period. The film's soundtrack features the music of Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Cole Porter, but also original music from the Cuban pianist and composer Bebo Valdés.

Fernando Trueba describes Chico and Rita as a bolero, a story of two young people in Cuba at the end of 40s. Sight and Sound described the same film as "visually arresting and musically rich", and Empire claimed that the film has "a delightful blend of hand-drawn animation and CG style". Where animation and jazz collide, Chico and Rita begins.

Chico and Rita will screen at Cine-Orpheus on Thursday, 7 April (21:00), with the support of Odeon S.A.
